Review of Titus (1999) by Jen H — 22 Oct 2009
The only real problems with this film are results of Taymor's usual weakness: her passion for delving into creatively surreal imagery occasionally backfires into pretentious, laughable folly.
Crankiness aside, that predilection of Taymor's is also her most soaring strength, and the arresting performances of Anthony Hopkins and his castmates will convince you to consider 'Titus Andronicus' as more than a bloody punchline.
(...although whyyyyyyy does it take several scenes before anyone figures out that Lavinia is still capable of writing? Way to go, Will).
