Review of Titus (1999) by Buddy K — 22 Mar 2010
Easily one of the strangest and most unique Shakespeare adaptations out there and of one of his most overlooked plays at that. Taymor's concept of it taking place in a mixture of various timelines (theres elements of ancient Rome, 1950's america and facist italy in there) is genius and works out pretty well.
Standouts in the cast are Anthony Hopkins and Harry Lenix. Hopkins is the perfect Titus Andronicus and plays it with all the firey passion and playful malice that should be there. Lenix is the perfect villain as Aaron the Moor and convincingly plays him as a man that lives to do awful things without being too over the top.
The costumes and set designs are gorgeous. Most impressively, the gory parts are handled in a comedic manner without ruining the serious parts of the story. It's very refreshing to see a good movie based on a Shakespeare play that's not Hamlet or Macbeth.
