Review of Titanic (1943) by Dustin D — 05 Sep 2015
Titanic is something of a guilty pleasure for me. The old-fashioned love story and the drama of the ship sinking are thoroughly engrossing, even though I cringe at most of the dialogue, which is badly delivered (especially by Leo).
This probably would have worked better as a silent film. I hate every line from Bill Paxton's sarcastic crew, Rose compares her voyage on the Titanic to being on a slave ship (really?), and how many ocean-liner disasters have you survived, Leo? You seem to know a lot about this.
Rose could have set her family up for life with the diamond she throws into the ocean (I don't mean the mother she lets believe she's dead, but her granddaughter who acts as her live-in nurse) before dying so her ghost can be reunited with a man she knew for a few days rather than the father of her children.
Despite all this, I still love this movie, even Celine Dion's sappy, dated theme song. Perhaps because Cameron's attention to detail and the craft that went into the film are hard to dismiss.
