Review of Titan A.E. (2000) by Marty B — 16 Jul 2011
OK, so if you are a SciFi fan you ought to see this one. But wow, wtf.
Titan A.E. uses a "children's" medium to tell an "adult" story. And, along the way it indulges in a lot of disorienting fantasmagoria.
What you have here is a blend of movie tropes that kind of form a confusing mess. The goal was clearly a long epic, where each stop and scene felt like it's own experience. But, the result is bland execution that is punctuated by the interesting depth of the concept.
It's just a really cool premise that wanted to be too many different things. Titan A.E. at different moments tries to be a charming adventure, a dark science-fiction, a fast-paced action movie, and a deep contemplative meditation.
Perhaps it could have pulled off the concept with better, and more well defined, characters.
As I said at the top, if you are into scifi there is some really cool stuff here. You just have to wade through the rest of the movie to get to it.
If you are really interested in reliving this area of movie-making, and you want this kind of story, I suggest watching Treasure Planet instead.
