Review of Tiptoes (2002) by Michael K — 31 Dec 2007
Flawed but interesting human relationship drama that explores the difficulty a young couple (Kate Beckinsale and Matthew McConaughey) have coming to terms with a pregnancy, following Beckinsale's character's discovery of her partner's genetic history.
There are plenty of criticisms of the film, mainly in its development of the secondary characters which is probably attributable to it's short running time. Upon reflection the film doesn't appear to be able to decide whether it's going to be quirky, funny or serious and sails all three before it gets it right in the final third.
I'm pretty sure there was a very good film under here and assume that the cutting of the film was due to them not being able to do anything outside of the main story arc, leaving a film that could have been a lot better.
Final bit about the performances, not much to say really other than Gary Oldman turned in one of his less hammy and consequently better ones, however aside from that it was a mixed bag with nobody else able to lift their game to the same level thanks to the script or their own limitations.
