Review of Tiny Furniture (2010) by Brodie A — 03 Jul 2012
Lena Dunham wrote and directed Tiny Furniture. She plays Aura and her real life mom (Laurie Simmons) and sister (Grace Dunham) play their natural roles. Most scenes take place in Simmons actual apartment. This information originally appealed to me and gave me the desire to watch. Aura is a new college graduate with a degree in film theory. She moves back in with her mom and sister to help out however they donâ(TM)t seem to want her help. Aura starts a job as a hostess. She has two love interests in the film. I was really rooting for the chef however he makes his move during an unusual scene and I lost interest immediately. The other guy uses her for a place to stay and isnâ(TM)t romantically interested in her. Tiny Furniture is filled with contrasting colors and has a slow, indy pace. It was a somewhat decent film. It didnâ(TM)t keep my attention from start to finish yet I was interested in seeing where it was going. Tiny Furniture has the feel of Reality Bites but it was missing the spark of Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke. Lena Dunham gained my respect by walking around in underwear and a t-shirt. She is not your typical shapeless actress and did an excellent job promoting beauty in her own way. I may have not loved this movie however I have a new respect for Lena Dunham for writing, directing, and staring in her own film.
