Review of TINY: A Story About Living Small (2013) by Nate B — 31 Aug 2014
Horribly Depressing. While Tiny attempts to show the virtue of simple living , it fails to bring any creativity to the off the grid artform. Rather than design with nature and nature in mind, Tiny is one man's attempt to build a TumbleWeed Home knock off with Home Depot off the shelf parts.
The end goal is to live within the confines of a birdhouse in the middle of nowhere with a girlfriend who admits she is NOT going to stick around. Wow.. Now all those carbon footprints trying to drive his truck from work to nowhere and back daily.
The attempt at finding reasonable people living a similar lifestyle also fails. Rather than show financially stable individuals with an end goal of self sufficiency, the real story seems to be of people stuck on the fringes with nowhere to turn but Tiny.
What bothers me is the total lack of imagination that came with these cookie cutter tiny homes, each looking almost identical to the next, like Fema trailers. If I'm going tiny, I'm going HUGE within the outdoor space, the urban gardens, the flower beds, the yurt, the outdoor kitchen, etc.
What I find in this documentary are people holed up inside, only this time they can't move very far. On that note, this film inspired me to never consider a TumbleWeed Home. If that is the positive side well.
