Review of TiMER (2009) by Matt R — 07 Jan 2011
This is yet again another movie that has an amazing concept and is unique and interesting, but falls short when it matters most. 'TiMER' is a romatic comedy about a device called a TiMER that is sweeping the nation guaranteeing its customers true love.
The device is a timer that is counting down the days, months, and in some cases years until you meet your true love. The moment you first lay eyes on him or her the device (which is attached to your wrist) hits zero and begins beeping.
The main character in this film (Oona) struggles with her belief in the device since hers hasn't even started counting down. I really enjoyed the creativeness and new outlook on the whole love at first sight concept.
The TiMER company tells their patients that it will beep the moment they meet thier true love or soulmate, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they will fall in love at that very moment. It simply reveals who their soulmate is, it may take years to get to know each other enough to fall in love.
It also opens all sorts of dilemmas about people having free will and that not everything is set in stone or predetermined. How would you like to meet your soulmate when your 15 and never have a chance to play the field? Or you can go to the extreme opposite end, and what if you won't meet your soulmate until your 45? Will you have meaningless after meaningless encounters waiting around for that special day, wasting all your youth? 'TiMER' definitely brings something fresh to the table and I'm glad I had a chance to see it, but the scattered ending and plethora of social and ethical issues it brings up leaves it a little short of great.
