Review of TiMER (2009) by Kim B — 29 Apr 2012
I'm actually surprised that I liked this half as much as I did, considering my relative dislike of the rom-com genre and my extreme dislike of movies that say there's really only one person for everyone.
Throw a little sci-fi in, though, and that's where you get me. The TiMER would really take a lot of the misery and agony of dating, and if I'd had one, I wouldn't have to have dealt with all the heartbreak.
But then, how would I really live my life, if I knew I wouldn't meet The One until such-and-such date? Wouldn't I miss out on some fun experiences? I'm glad Oona (whose name REALLY bothers me) lived at least some of her life even though she dealt with TiMER-related angst.
The relationship between her and Mikey was really sweet even though it seemed pretty much doomed and ill-advised from the get-go (he's about 8 years younger, they have nothing in common, he's immature, etc.
). Not sure how I feel about the ending, but even if not every character ends up happy, the way this movie works ensures they will be eventually. Which is yet another charming point of a movie that was already very sweet and charming to begin with.
A good antidote to the big-budget rom-coms that open weekly.
