The film is as bad as described, after initially seeing a preview for this I thought it might be pretty good. the problem I had with this film is the central story which is half baked at best. the characters are all very one dimensional and the film seems to drag on.
Richard donner made a film that had no appeal to anyone, the whole idea of the film is quite silly.
Read the book and forget the film.
