Review of Time Out of Mind (2015) by Richard S — 07 Aug 2017
Richard Gere plays against type in a film about a homeless man who has lost all sense of his identity and to an extent refuses to accept his situation for what it is. There is a plot point about a man trying to reconnect with his daughter but this almost plays second fiddle to a film that takes an unsentimental look at life on the streets of New York.
It's about the day to day struggle of finding food and shelter but also the loneliness of having nowhere to go and nothing to do with your time. It is a slow film that demands patience and so won't be to everyone's taste but I did enjoy it, especially the way it was filmed.
It's almost filmed from the shadows, always at a distance from it's central lead, it makes the performances look a lot more natural plus we also see the indifference to the homeless by everyone else who happened to be walking by during filming.
