Review of Time Bandits (1981) by T.a. P — 29 Sep 2008
Haphazard, episodic, slapstick, and anachronistic, Time Bandits is a time travel whimsy, social critique of mass consumerism, a scanty history lesson, a sideshow of people all shapes, sizes, and compositions, and a morality play between Evil and the Supreme Being.
Foreshadowing familiar Gilliam tropes (giants, dwarves, monsters, utterly sloppy clothing and set design), Time Bandits works if one views it through the prism of childhood. Considered part one of a "Trilogy of Imagination," Time Bandits is the weakest installment, but a harmless time warp nonetheless.
