Review of Time After Time (1979) by Mirabella 1 — 05 Feb 2010
Another winner....it could hardly fail for me (2x of my favourite actors, one of my favourite genres & a new slant on my favourite villain from history, Jack The Ripper)!!!
Now, for everyone else, it IS actually a very good film....a fast-paced (but not confusing), quirky thriller/drama/romance/sci-fi....something for everyone!
Just briefly, HG Wells ends up travelling through time (in an actual time machine he has built but not yet found the courage to use) in hot pursuit of his best friend, Dr.John Lesley Stephenson, who has just been revealed to be the notorious Jack the Ripper. They end up in present-day San Francisco (lots of opportunities here for some priceless anachronistic gags), where the good Dr quickly makes himself at home, whilst poor HG is more than a little overwhelmed. Enter the future Mrs McDowell (Mary Steenburgen) & watch as they fall in love both on & off the screen.
Performances are superb, the script written by director Nicholas Meyer is near-perfect, all loose ends are tied up, no schmaltz, enough twists & turns to keep one interested & guessing right to the end , but it never tries to be too clever & spoil itself by becoming confusing in th eprocess.
This film is a delight.
Everybody should see it at least once!
