Review of Timbuktu (2014) by Ray H — 30 Mar 2015
This is an OK film. The story is brief. It held my interest. We a family of herdsmen living in the rural part of some country near Libya. They are trying to stay put; after apparently moving earlier. There are radical, sharia law Muslims afoot. These terrorists are imposing their severe brand of Islam upon the local population. They operate primarily in a small, nearby local village.
Our hero, the local, peace loving herdsman, runs amuck with the interlopers. There are unpleasant consequences all around.
The film was fairly well done. We see that the radicals are less than perfect in their religious zealotry. Some of them smoke, enjoy music, and are fans of European football; all of which are "forbidden".
The film was something of a downer. Some scenes of cruelty which were handled with some sensitivity; still brought out audible gasps from a few female members of the audience.
It was an OK; if not completely satisfying trip to the flics.
