Review of Timbuktu (2014) by James C — 21 Aug 2015
We had the DVD disc for quite a few days and finally picked up focus to see it, knowing that it is a serious film with an equally heavy message. My expectation (or fear) has been confirmed. It is a most mentally taxing movie in the sense that the content is hard to take -- the injustice, tyranny, helplessness of the people being bullied and ruled over, let alone a tremendous sense of sadness.
The depth of its sadness is conveyed when the young woman sings when she is being whipped for being in the same room with young men not of her family. She expresses the injustice and helplessness using what she does best.
A movie like this reminds me of the preciousness of freedom.
