Review of Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (2012) by Matthew B — 14 Nov 2012
Unlike most people, I actually liked this movie. Call it a guilty pleasure, but I'm a huge fan of Tim and Eric's work, especially Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! I always thought they could rise above the small time frame in their show, which barely fits 15 minutes, into something longer.
Even though I like this movie, I have to admit that maybe this was too long of them to try. Tim and Eric's sick and odd sense of humor is definitely there and that's what I liked them for. But the thing is, they set it up to be like Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job except in movie length and really didn't deliver on that part.
If anything, I feel rather disappointed by this movie because I personally thought Tim and Eric could have pulled it off. I watched this movie in hopes to see all the things that made Tim and Eric so great for me, and it was there.
.. but I feel that either there wasn't enough to make a movie with or that they decided to keep it on low for the film. That's the problem. All the parts with Tim and Eric just trying to run the mall was fine, but I feel their usual kind of sketch-ish comedy was a little wasted because we didn't see much of what we usually see in their show.
It just seems poorly executed and I think it's a shame because the movie is still brilliant and hilarious, if not completely disgusting at times. It just feels like a waste of their talent and would have worked better as a special or even just another episode if they cut it a bit.
Though on a positive note, the cameos were rather nice and had some great stars like Robert Loggia, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Will Forte, Zach Galifianakis and Jeff Goldblum who played their roles well and even convincingly.
They aren't exactly strangers to the series but are certainly welcomed to the movie and do well to help it survive. It barely stands as a good movie and personally, I liked it a lot. However, I can see that this movie stands in a way that shows how much potential it had and only ended up making a rickety bridge that almost collapsed it into mediocrity, but they managed to make it to the land of fairly good movies.
Though one last note. This movie can be very disgusting and even repulsive at times (Shrim and such) that it can get quite sickening, but that's their thing. Tim and Eric wanted to disgust audiences and this movie certainly takes the Shrim covered cake in repulsive and disgusting.
Great Job!
