Review of Tigerland (2000) by Scott R — 14 Feb 2007
Hell no he doesn't want to go......
Review of Tigerland.
Tigerland - 6/10.
Director - Joel Schumacher.
Starring - Colin Farrell, Matthew Davis, Clifton Collins Jr., Shea Whigham, Cole Hauser.
It's 1971, the Vietnam War is still raging, and Roland Bozz (Colin Farrell) will do about anything to get out of the army so he won't have to ship out to Vietnam. However no matter how much he rebels in basic training, the Army won't let him off the hook so easy. Instead Bozz manages to get other soldiers freed from their duties and ends up receiving an unwelcomed promotion.
For the most part Tigerland is an engaging picture. The film seems to strive for authenticity despite some highly implausible situations involving Bozz. I highly doubt he could have gotten away with some of the stuff he did. By contrast the opening half of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket seemed to make no apologies for being over-the-top, and yet it's far superior to Tigerland. Perhaps a better ending would have done this film more justice, but despite it's flaws Tigerland is worth seeing. A nice performance by Colin Farrell.
