Review of Tigerland (2000) by Jess K — 09 Feb 2009
Not a dogma 95 film but way stripped from much of Schumacher's previous work, and about a hundred times better. The cast is phenomenal from top to bottom, especially Farrell as a sort of brash Yossarian character, and Davis as his wanna-be wartime writer partner.
The film never reaches Deer Hunter-like levels but manages to feel very tense while never leaving the relative safety of training. While it makes the army look like the last bastion of screw-ups, sadists and sociopaths, many of the characters are highly likable.
For such an in-the-moment film the "I'll write a book about you" subplot feels tacked-on and sentimental (and as a writer demeans my craft). Could also serve as alternative viewing for those who can't handle Deer Hunter, Saving Private Ryan, or Full Metal jacket.
