Review of Tideland (2005) by Dom K — 29 Jun 2009
Really, really brave, when you think about it. Normally if you're going to do an Alice in Wonderland-esque story in film, you'd show what Alice is seeing to the audience. Gilliam doesn't, and mostly just shows Jeliza-Rose playing. Imagine Brazil's dream sequences if all we saw was Lowry lying in bed, snoring.
Somehow though, despite being 2 hours of watching a kid play, it's really, really good. Possibly this is because what she's playing with, the surroundings she's in, are utterly disturbing, giving the whole film a twisted feeling. Possibly it's just that Jodelle Ferland is ridiculously believable as a totally normal girl. Either way, it's amazing.
