Review of Tideland (2005) by Trev B — 20 Oct 2009
The book is bizarre but brilliant and this is a very faithful adaptation. A lot of critics really went to town on it but I've a feeling none of them have read the book or maybe they're just squeamish, reactionary, hand-wringing twats (which certainly goes for the American provincial tabloid asswipes).
Jodelle Ferland gives an excellent central performance - Hollywood casting directors should take note, not only of her talent but also of this as an example of how to get child casting right. As with many of Gilliam's films, it's both funny and disturbing.
Well worth a watch.
