Review of Tideland (2005) by Hannah F — 12 Apr 2012
I don't even know where to start... I lost a lot of respect for Gilliam's directing before this movie even began. The DVD opens up with Gilliam explaining to you why you shouldn't hate it and from there on in it becomes an unenjoyable experience of trying to ignore the fact that even the film's director knows he failed at portraying something comprehendable.
While Jeff Bridges' performance was good it was short lived and Jodelle Ferland had her moments but inevitably, her inability to feign laughter was her downfall (because her character was constantly laughing).
All in all the director's perspectives were never realized on film and the movie just came out looking pretentious even though it's clear that was not the Gilliam's intention. This was just a poorly made movie- who know's what went wrong from a normally brilliant Gilliam.
