Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Terryll L — 28 Mar 2008
The first time I saw this film it was a pan+scan vhs copy. I have always been a fan of the dystopis/utopia, post apocalyptic genre and this was no different. I liked the film, but didn't love it, that is until I saw the laser disc widescreen version.
I was floored by the cinematography by Albert Kihn and David Myers. their use of the depth of field and negative space perfectly shaped the mood of the film along with Lalo Schifrin's score and without a doubt Walter Murch's sound design.
a technically superior film that paved the way for Lucas' obsession with technology. Too bad he didn't keep making films like this. OH YEH, why the hell did he fuck this film up with that 'director's cut' new and improved version!!! I always loved the fact that the orginal version felt like a smaller more claustrophobic setting.
