Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Matthew A — 27 May 2008
While not a perfect film, it is an interesting and surprisingly solid film in his first feature. It is a great critique of a futuristic society as well as mixing silent, French New Wave, and sci-fi cinema.
I believe this is a place where his talent really did shine through. Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence are excellent in this film. Duvall really did have a great jumpstart in his career that included great performances in this, Robert Altman's MASH, and Coppola's films, The Godfather and The Conversation.
I wish Lucas would go back to these humble beginnings, but sadly he has abandoned it and sold his soul to technology over substance.
