Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Mat E — 16 Jun 2008
George Lucas' early work about a futuristic dystopian state starts out confusing, then gets incredibly boring but at least ends somewhat exciting. The story of workers kept under drugs to stay under control and one of them refusing to play along any longer pretty much follows the stereotypes of dystopian storytelling.
The special effects and visual set up of the movie are pretty impressing, considering its age, except for that horrible middle part with the actors sitting in front of white background for what feels like ages.
The showdown makes up for a lot, but still there isn't much of a plot to talk about and a lot of questions remain unanswered. Respectable and interesting as an early work of a successful director but by itself not all that great.
