Few could have predicted that the man who made this cold, bleak vision of a future society controlled by mind-numbing drugs and violent robots would go on to make Star Wars. It's a classic of downtrodden sci-fi, with some truly horrifying implications and a standout performance by Duvall as the doomed rebel.
