Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Kenneth L — 06 Jan 2009
A very impressive first movie from George Lucas. The story is straight out of 1984 and other dystopian stories, but the plot isn't really the movie's strong point. What the movie does do quite successfully is to create an effectively eerie, unsettling, and oppressive atmosphere.
The sets and sound really work to create a profoundly creepy little world. Duvall is strangely passive as the hero, but then perhaps that's the result of the years of sedation the character has been under.
I am of course glad that Lucas went on to make the Star Wars movies, but I think this film shows that he could have still become fairly well-known even without Star Wars.
