Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Lindsay W — 10 Jan 2009
It's a movie I both liked, and at the same time, didn't. Lucas, if nothing else, comes up with some interesting concepts. This film certainly delivers on ideas and thought-provoking visions of the future.
Yet like 2001, which Lucas no doubt hoped to mimic, it often loses itself in visuals instead of telling a story or engaging in social commentary. True, on the odd occasion it actually does support the movie, and no doubt many of the effects were highly advanced for the time.
Yet on the whole, it's unnecessary filler. And although Lucas provides things to contemplate, he never provides much of a point of view or fully examines the subject. In short, the film is only as good as the audience wants to make it, as Lucas only provided a beginning point.
So is it genius, or laziness?
