Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Gareth B — 07 Mar 2009
Despite his best efforts to ruin his creation by editing in quite a bit of needless CGI for the "Director's Cut" DVD, George Lucas' first outing into the world of cinema is both hypnotic, beautiful and disturbing.
Imagining a dystopia very much in the realm of "Nineteen Eighty-Four" or "Brave New World", THX offers us a frightening glimpse into a world without emotion, where everything is observed and controlled.
Duvall pulls off a composed performance as the title character, whilst the supporting cast (notably Donald Pleasence) are also great. However, it is the excellent, bleakly minimalist set design and creepy background sound effects that really deserve recognition here, creating an atmosphere that it instantly forboding and oppressive.
