Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Kenneth S — 24 Mar 2009
Picked up the 2 disc directors cut on DVD for the bargain price of £3.00 over the weekend!
Lucas's debut feature and the first film for the ill fated American Zoetrope brand and it doesn't pull any punches. Here Lucas presents his cut of the film, fully restored. There is a little bit of trademark digital trickery added in (leave it alone George!), but not too much. The print is stunning though and shows how much Lucas's bleak vision of the future was so wayahead of its time, stylistically speaking. Walter Murch's sound design gives the film a very modern feel and helps Lucas's 'used future feel no end'. A sci-fi classic that was criminally ignored by the studio and audiences upon its initial release. Packaged with this DVD set is the original USC short film 'Electronic Labrynth THX1138 EB', and original release short doco called 'Bald' and a couple of fascinating doco's concentrating on the early days of Zoetrope and the making of THX1138.
