Review of THX 1138 (1971) by David A — 29 Mar 2009
George Lucas's first film and wow! This film is unlike any other Sci-Fi film of it's time, the first 10 minutes are difficult as there are many strange noises and very weird clips of different things, I found it very hard to settle into this film, but once I did, I found this film to be at a high quality.
I watched the director's cut version, and like his Star Wars films he has gone back and added things to the film to make it look "better", and they are so obvious, I don't think he needed to put then in, although the clean up job is fantastic.
Also you can see characteristics of Star Wars in this film, the camera angels and the sound effects, also the police troops are robotic, and they have the feel of Storm Troopers which is very interesting.
It seems very strange then that George then went away and made American Graffiti which is a million miles away from the Sci-Fi world? Overall this film although very cold does have a heart, and yes it's not the greatest film in the world but this film plants the roots for Star Wars so for this reason alone it's well worth having a look.
