Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Liina P — 26 Apr 2009
Artistic, thought-provoking science fiction film. Duvall is great but it's Pleasence who really steals the show as a rebel who's all talk, no walk. Striking art direction (the metallic robot cops, the pure white cells and hallways) and an effective score are welcome as well.
It can get a tad slow, though, and unfortunately I saw the Director's Cut (read: Special Edition) which added a couple weird and noticeable modern touches. It's sad actually; the first film by George Lucas shows such intelligence and creativity (the same seen in the original Star Wars Trilogy), but now he feels compelled to overwrite his praised original cut.
