Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Sean R — 30 Oct 2009
This was a great dystopian film, it didn't feel as derivative as something like Equilibrium and is a great example of how well George Lucas can create a rich fantasy world onscreen. I liked how strongly he conveyed themes of anticonsumerism and freedom from control so they were as much on the forefront as the storyline, and the officers provided plenty of comic relief.
More than anything it was cool to see something Lucas made before he got into his blockbuster groove. I've heard that he was into a lot of experimental film (supposedly Arthur Lipsett's 21-87 was a major influence on this) but I don't know if there are any other examples.
