Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Jason J — 18 Dec 2009
I watched the director's cut and haven't seen the original. I wish I had seen the original before this one because I had no point of reference of which I could understand the changes and whatnot. As independent filmmaking goes this is inspired work. The way it's filmed is tedious to watch at times but it stayed with me. I love the concept of it being more of a movie from the 20th century than one about the 20th century. I liked how it took little to no measure to explain the strange occurrences onscreen. It reminded me a lot of "Cube", especially the end when the protagonist escapes to a blinding light and then the film ends.
Watching the movie was interesting and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it at the time. But I knew the next day that it was not only a thought provoking film but perhaps a great one because I could not stop thinking about it. A great, interesting addition to the underrated sci-fi genre.
