Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Mikael K — 07 Apr 2010
Somewhat tedious and a bit too simple, "THX 1138" is still the best George Lucas film I have ever seen. Here a barren, painfully sterile future dystopia is shown through the eyes of two nearly catatonic inhabitats of a future city.
A world where people have been turned into automated shells is not a new one in science fiction, and this film doesn't really have anything that original to deliver. The symbolism and allegorial connection to totalitarian societies also feels a bit too obvious. Nontheless this is a film that has ambition, and the gloomy future feels hauntingly real, making this a disturbing viewing experience on an emotional level. Even if it could have used some polishing and some more innovative storytelling.
