Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Mark L — 11 Apr 2010
The director's cut, which I hadn't previously seen. The tinkering he did here didn't bother me, as he didn't actively change ay plot points, as he did when Greedo shot first, but he did open up the world, and made it seem more of a full society.
His indictment of religion is very interesitng, and Robert Duvall is perfect here. The movie is a good 15 mintues too long though, and even with that it's not even 90 minutes long. The worst thing about this, as Courtney pointed out, is that it's overly ambition. It seems as if Lucas threw everything he could/ ever wanted in a movie, just in case this was his only one. Everything works on their own terms, especially the continued cutting to the same "telephone operator". But because of this jumble, not all the stories converge as a whole, but hey, I'll take this over freaking Jar-Jar any day of the week.
