Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Amasa G — 10 Jul 2010
Watching a George Lucas Science Fiction isn't a very strange thing to do - but watch a George Lucas Science Fiction/ Art House IS a very strange thing to do. And this movie is strange - but not so strange that you can't follow it.
After watching this movie, I realized that The Island was more or less a ripoff of this film. If you liked The Island but thought it was a little shallow - this is your film.
For its time the Cinematography couldn't have been any better. George Lucas has a habit of updating the film technology but not the style - so there are those obnoxiously long action sequences that are more repetitive than they need to be.
The moral is a pretty simple concept - but it consumes about 75% of this film.
In the end the film shows skill and thoughtfulness but lacks enough soul to break through the fourth wall.
