Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Mike G — 25 Oct 2010
"What's wrong?" As good and as strange a first feature as George Lucas could have come up with I think. He had help. Coppola also produced his first Zoetrope picture, and it almost sunk him.
I think Walter Murch's contribution to the sound engineering and screenplay are a big part of the film's success. Of course he'd work with Coppola again and again on much bigger films. Anyways, this is like "Brave New World" and "1984" in a lot of ways with its dystopian view of a future underground and drugged society, which is controlled by a dubious "religious" sect and enforced by the very machines that they build.
It doesn't make a lot of sense logic-wise, but the images, the sounds, and the acting keep it intriguing.
