Review of THX 1138 (1971) by Corey W — 28 Oct 2013
It's really kind of remarkable that this film came from the same director responsible for the Star Wars prequels. What is so avant garde and stylish here is completely absent in the future films of Mr. Lucas.
That being said, 'THX 1138' isn't exactly a resounding success either. While the film barrels along at a breakneck pace and features countless fascinating images, the story itself never really gives you time to actually care or become invested. The main character never earns our sympathy despite the fact that we can see that life is horrible for those who live in his tightly controlled world.
Like any good sci-fi this says more about our current times (or the time the film was made) but beyond that it is merely an insightful first look at an emerging director's talents and shortcomings.
