Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Meeza (Lobsterman) — 17 May 2008
Here is my thumbs down comments of the independent film "Thumbsucker": I hate to say this but the filmmakers of the film must have had their thumbs up their asses when they though of the concept : a deranged solitude teenager who at 17 still sucks his thumb and how his addiction to antidepressants eventually allows him to cease this "one for the thumb" addiction. The films premise is a bit novel but the inclusion of the drug addiction, and the sexual awakening to the prime character is a bit formulaic. Writer-Director Mile Mills direction and screenplay was dreary and cluttered. Vincent D'Onofrio and Tilda Swinton, who are real acting talents, got fingered here with Thumbsucker's monotonous screenplay and were not able to portray their thespian artistry. Keanu Reeves. Period! I could not brace myself to see Reeves play a philosophical orthodontist.
Here is my thumbs up comments of the independent film "Thumbsucker: I do have to give a hand (or a thumb for that matter) to Lou Pucci who does a formidable job in his acting debut as Justin the Thumbsucker. He does have a bright future and if he selects highbrow roles then we will all be yelling: "Hey, we want some Pucci" Hey, we want some Pucci". The vibrant Vince Vaughn shines again as Justin's fussy debate coach. There is no debate that Vaughn is one of the finest verbal actors of our generation.
That's about it! I think that Pucci and especially Vaughn lick this thumb just enough for me to give "Thumbsucker" a marginal (very marginal) Thumps Up. *** Average.
