Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Greg G — 24 Nov 2007
It's another story about growing up and finding one's self, but this time the motivation comes from an unusual habit for a 17 year old: thumb sucking. Justin Cobb wants to stop, bot only begins to find luck after his orthodontist (Keanu Reeves) hypnotizes him and asks him to call on his power animal (in one of the film's great moments, it's a baby deer).
He turns to Ritalin as his power animal after being diagnosed with ADD, and soon becomes a confident member of the debate team. Etc. I mention all of this to get something through: the story itself is boring and rote.
Thumbsucker succeeds because of its characters - and not just Justin. His parents make the most of their appearences, and it's arguably as much about them despite comparatively little screen time.
Bottom line: unassuming and good enough.
