Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Shannon W — 16 Jan 2008
This movie was definitely interesting. The realistic awkwardness was fantastic, and Lou Taylor Pucci was excellent as the somewhat homely boy who is a master debater yet still has thing for his ex-best friend who happens to be a girl who now just cavorts about sniffing household cleaners.
I think I enjoyed it because it had that kind of Napoleon Dynamite feel to it. By that I mean it felt like it has actually happened somewhere in Montana or whatever, it's just that no one really gets that up close and intimate with a family they don't know or care about. But fortunately, Mike Mills has captured that essence so we don't have to.
