Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Aaron D — 28 Mar 2008
I don't really think it can be called an "indie" in the truer sense of the word if it stars Keanu Reeves, Vince Vaughn, and Tilda Swinton (among others). The character flaws in the film aren't over the top, and remain appropriately human.
I feel that the movie is tangible and thankfully (as far as the plot is concerned) unformulaic. More than anything, I appreciate the theme of evolution through the context of the relationships created onscreen.
I can't really say that as individuals they are entirely loveable; I have to feel some apathy for them. While the film is quite a bit like "Charlie Bartlett", I feel both films are in a ouvre which has become the face of what people expect an "indie" film to be (or what they believe to be an "indie").
I'll be curious to see where it goes in the future.
