Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Ryan B — 08 May 2008
"Thumbsucker" is a uniquely told story of adolescence that deals with a plethora of social problems, including drug addiction, teen sex, and family dysfunction. What makes this film different then others in its genre, is that it's message isn't exactly clear.
In fact, there might not even be a message. A "bumper sticker" quote delivered from Keanu Reeves towards the end reflects this attitude: "The trick... is living without an answer." Maybe in the end this is the message.
Maybe there is no single right answer to any question; Maybe there is no right way to live. If there is one definitive thing I can say about this movie, its that it is in your face and it doesn't hold anything back.
This film contains an all-star cast that delivers great acting all around, but what stood out most to me was the dialogue. Mike Mills provides a truly flawless adapted screenplay that constantly reflects the true life essence of human emotion.
It's really a shame that more people won't have an opportunity to see this due to it's independent status. Believe it or not, they were actually giving it away free at the DVD store. Easily the best $0 I've ever spent, and I can't wait to watch it again.
