Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by David V — 14 Jun 2008
Awesome. Just Awesome. Everyone should see this film.
It occurred to me that Keanu might have been cast in this film as a joke which I think actually works pretty well ("Why are you talking like that?" the protagonist asks when Keanu is talking in his serious, deep Neo voice). I'm just not sure that Keanu was in on the joke.
Vince Vaughn is brilliant as usual but it would be negligent to say that his only role was the comic relief. He has an astounding ability to produce some character points and narrative devices in and entertaining and believable fashion, mostly through the process of improv and bringing his own ideas to the script.
Kelli Garner is just hot... Beautiful, and brilliant. I love every frame of any movie that she is in. One to watch.
Also, Benjamin Bratt's scene is just great.
Mike Mills just did an excellent job casting and adapting this film and it seems to me that he has a keen sensibility to know when to let the collective talent just do their thing and how to allow them to do that.
Looking forward to seeing more from you Mike!...
