Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Kenneth K — 20 Nov 2009
Mills takes some very typical things in a coming of age tale and somehow still makes an enjoyable film. I thought from the beginning I knew how everything would play out, but fortunately most already happens within the first thirty minutes and everything else follows its own path.
It reminds me of what Rocket Science wanted to be. I really enjoyed the fact that they brought the entire family into the story. In that sense, it reminded me of The Squid and the Whale. Everyone in a family has their own issues, and when one person is affected then all are affected.
There were a few open ends story wise, but it made sense for the moral and issues facing the characters. Reeves has perhaps one of the best lines in the film. I won't ruin it for you, but as a hint, he drops a line commenting on Bill and Ted.
