Review of Thumbsucker (2005) by Scott M — 02 Apr 2011
Another in a long line of coming-of-age indies inspired by Rushmore (hell, the main actor actually looks quite a bit like a young Wes Anderson), this one is probably better than most, but still falls short of anything profound, instead what we are left with is an interesting quirky story with a lot of awkward moments.
The supporting cast is impressive, with Vince Vaughn and Keanu Reeves sticking out as doing much better work than we're used to seeing from them. Unfortunately, the debate sequences are so full of stupid talk meant to sound smart that the film feels incredibly pretentious as a result.
