Review of Thumbelina (1994) by Bob C — 24 Jul 2013
WHOA! Where to start.
The songs are awful. The heroine is a vapid idiot. The songs are really awful.
Of course, Bluth's animation is always distinctive--cleaner here than in most of his films--and always a welcome change of pace from Disney.
But Thumbelina can't stand on animation alone. There has to be a story with a compelling lead character. Thumbelina is not compelling. Thumbelina's a moron. If she were any dumber, she'd be cheese.
And songs. If you're going to have songs, have good ones--even great ones. Oh, and have them sung by good singers--maybe even great singers--not screeching chickens. If I ever--EVER--have to hear those horrid barnyard hens screech 'Thumbelina' again, I shudder to think what I might do.
