Review of Thumbelina (1994) by Éric I — 19 Dec 2015
As an animation and sequence director at Disney, I was critical of Don Bluth's altogether lack of understanding of visual film aesthetics; on his own and without guidance, Don Bluth takes it dangerously farther and his work becomes nothing short of grotesque.
An irritating whiny "heroine" ("save me, I'm a girl, I can do nothing without assistance!") lost among a seemingly-endless string of horrendously-designed character prototypes, songs that make one's ears bleed for mercy in a 'story' that drives the characters, rather than the other way around.
Its stronger competition: a modestly-budgeted little film from American Film Investment Corporation II released directly-to-video two years prior. The winner: that moderately-budgeted little film by one, two or fifty-three landslides.
