Review of Throne of Blood (1957) by Michael D — 19 May 2008

As far as adaptations of Shakespeare go this is by far the best one I've seen. Quite surprising actually when you consider that the dialogue, which is the most important part of Shakespeare's work, has been completely altered and substituted for another language.

What makes this film so compelling is the incredible directionary power of Akira Kurosawa, combining vivid scenery with epic action. As for the archers finale, well that was just intense. I would recommend this not only as an excellent foreign language film but also as the best adaptation of any Shakespearean play that I have ever seen on film, a masterpiece.
