One of Kurosawa's more overlooked, yet amazing films. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play, and the material works perfectly reinvented with Samurai culture. Surprisingly violent, but appropriately so.
I don't think there has ever been an artist and a muse that work so perfectly as Kurosawa and Mifune. From Shakespearean to Japanese, then from Japanese to English, I'm sure some of the dialogue's intended impact will be lost on most people.
If you have the criterion dvd and the time on your hands, I suggest watching it twice with each set of subtitles to get the best understanding of the language.
